The rate in which your metabolism declines is influenced by your
sex, age (metabolism naturally declines by 5% per decade after age
25!) and amount of lean body mass (generally the more muscle you have,
the higher your metabolic rate). These are just a few aspects to
consider. Not everyone burns calories at the same rate.
Twelve simple tips to boost your metabolism, detoxify your body and start your day on the right note!
1. Having a solid night’s sleep (6-8 hours a night): Chronic lack of
sleep can slow metabolism, increase appetite and increase risks of
obesity and weight gain. Lack of sleep has also been shown to decrease
the number of calories your body burns while in a resting state.
2. Avoid high-fat foods in the morning: A high-fat meal first thing
in the morning can negatively affect your metabolism for the rest of
the day! Look to a protein-packed breakfast that will help you stay
satisfied and in turn, revving up your metabolism to burn more
calories throughout the day.
3. Say no to refined grains: Refined grains such as breads, scones,
bagels, pasta and cakes cause the over secretion of insulin. Insulin
is secreted from the pancreas to regulate the uptake of glucose from
the bloodstream to the cells. Excess insulin results in excess fat
being stored in the body.
4. More veggies! Due to the high fiber content of vegetables, the
body needs to work hard in order to break it down therefore using up
energy while boosting your metabolism. Vegetables are also high in
nutrients and low in calories naturally encouraging weight loss.
5. Eat wild fish: Fish has been shown to increase levels of
fat-burning enzymes and helps your body to decrease levels of
fat-storage enzymes. If you are choosing a supplement, look for one
that contains EPA and DHA in a 3:1 ratio.
6. Optimize your thyroid: The thyroid gland is your body’s internal
thermostat, regulating temperature by secreting two hormones that
control how quickly calories are burned and where energy is used. I
suggest seeking a Naturopathic Doctor to get proper testing done, or
you can conduct your own Basal Body Temperature test.
7. H2O: Drinking 8-10 glasses a day is a simple way to help aid digestion and burn calories.
8. Starvation, not an option: Restricting food won’t help you lose
weight because you are slowing down your metabolism. If you are
hungry, eat a well balanced meal to keep you on your game throughout
the day!
9. Keep it hot: Chili peppers contain a bio-active chemical called capsinoids which encourage weight loss and appetite control.
10. Green is keen: Matcha Green Tea contains a type of antioxidant
called catechins, which have been shown to help lose weight and also
provide cancer-fighting benefits.
11. Get ready to sweat: high-intensity interval training
incorporates aerobic, interval, strength and core exercises for a
short amount of time. Exercising this way 3 days a week has been shown
to yield results quicker than the conventional slow and steady
aerobics 5 days a week. – Increased heart rate has been shown to
increase metabolic rate for up to 12 hours after exercise
12. *LAUGH!* This is the most important one in my opinion. A healthy
state of mind is key for living an optimal, healthy life. Researchers
have found that as little as 10 minutes of laughing a day can burn
calories! So go ahead, laugh a little and keep smiling!!!!
No matter what your gender, your age you can increase your
metabolism by following a few of the twelve tips stated above; so,
take action and enjoy a happier, healthier you even if it’s just
making the effort to laugh each and every day.
